I spent most of yesterday working on WikiHowNot. I rolled out two new features: ratings and discussion pages. Additionally I fixed a lot of old code. I think I got most of it working and bug free (cross your fingers). There’s more information in the new “News” area underneath the welcome message, with details on a separate page.

Now, to sell you guys on the website, it’s incredible! It’s a place just like WikiHow only the opposite, hence the name. It lets anybody register and write/edit (and now discuss and rate) articles.

In the plans I’ve got an actual star display I’m working on for the ratings instead of a number, and I’m going to be adding some other new features and AJAXifying some of the site. Pay it a visit and if you have any suggestions, let me know here in the comments or by email at either Michael.Noker@gmail.com or WikiHowNot@gmail.com. If you get a great (or even mediocre) idea for a how not to article, be sure to post it! I crave users!

Remember to register so you’ll be the first to know about any new features and also be the first to get the chance to give feed back!

In other news, I’m working on a couple scholarship application essays. I also applied for a student loan with Wells Fargo, so I have another letter:

Dear girl who helped me today,

You’re a junior in college, and you were incredibly nice to me and incredibly helpful. I really didn’t plan on applying for a loan today, but you were just so nice I had to apply and get you a sale! Thank you and I’m so sorry I didn’t get your name! After I hung up I thought about calling back and giving your supervisor a call about you because you were just so damn great and absolutely deserve a pay raise!

Sincerely,

Michael

Dear PHP

July 16, 2008

I don’t miss using you at all. We’ve been reintroducing ourselves to each other for about three days now, and I don’t regret leaving you for C++.

Your idea of object-oriented programming? Yeah… it sucks. I’m sorry to say that, but it does. C++ is so much cleaner, well thought-out, developed, polished. Yours? It looks like you just threw it all together to make your supporters happy. Please. Try again.

I heard you’re improving yourself now, too. You got a makeover apparently, and now you’re waiting to come out and show the world your new shit. Please, hurry. Your version five is painful to work with. I don’t want to go back fixing everything now just because you can’t get it right the first, second, or even fifth time. Keep trying, though. I’ll wait.

It’s not that you’re not better than ASP. You are, by far, the greatest for web development. Javascript can’t use servers and can be turned off. ASP is useless and ugly. But you. You’re so busy trying to look like C that you can’t do anything uniquely, or even better than others.

PHP, I loved you for a while, when you were the only language I knew. But these days we’ve gotten stale. Thus, I’m going to finish this project with you, and then move on to bigger things. I would not like any more contact with you after this project is finished and I would appreciate no more fatal errors.

Sincerely,

Michael
